Type of cephalopod found in the Indian and
Pacific oceans. The pearly nautilus Nautilus
pompilius has a chambered spiral shell about
20 cm/8 in in diameter. Its body occupies the
outer chamber. The nautilus has a large
number of short, grasping tentacles
surrounding a sharp beak. The living nautilus
is a representative of a group common 450
million years ago. Paper nautilus is an
alternative name for the argonaut, a type of
octopus. Nautilus is also the name of the
world's first nuclear-powered submarine,
launched by the USA 1954. It sailed under the
ice cap to the North Pole.
